Something to Crow About

Miss BJ over at Sweet Nothings, stopped by yesterday to invite me to participate in Beverly's Rooster Parade. She said that I might have a real rooster photo that I could share.

Well..... it just so happens that I do:)

This is Henry the 2nd. He looks identical to Henry the 1st who, unfortunately for him, met an untimely demise because he was such a mean spirited animal and all the other chickens lived in terror of him. So, in the end, he was only good for one thing....Chicken Stew.

Henry the 2nd is not nearly as "fowl" tempered as the 1st and so he lives a rather pampered life, tending his harem and crowing at dawn, noon, evening and any other time the mood strikes him.

He does, on a regular occasion, like to demonstrate his "Ruler of the Roost" authority by challenging any and all who come near. You would think that he would learn that each flogging attempt is met with a swift rap across the head with a very large wooden dowel, but bless him, he is just not that bright and very often he winds up with a sore noggin.

I have heard some people talk about friendly, docile roosters, but I have never met one and honestly I think they are just an urban myth, or maybe that should be a "rural" myth:)

Although he can be quite a stinker, he also deserves a measure of respect. At the first hint of danger, he sounds the warning, rounds up the hens and goes into defensive mode. If he finds a tasty morsel, he does not eat it himself. Instead, he makes a low clucking type sound that brings the hens running to him and he will let one of them have it. He takes his role of protector and provider very seriously, and for that, he has earned my admiration. I have to remind myself of this on the very rare occasions when he catches me off guard and succeeds in spurring my leg. At that moment, I start thinking Chicken Stew sounds mighty good;)

Thanks, BJ for asking my to share in the parade. I hope everyone enjoyed meeting Henry.

Before I go, I have one more thing to crow about~

Today is my Sweet Hubby's birthday. If you would like to wish him a happy day, you can hop over to his new blog, Velocraig, and tell him so.

OK, guess I better get going...I've got a cake to bake and a cook-out to get ready....mushroom Swiss burgers anyone?

Hi!
HB to hubby! You so inspired me with your garden frames that I decided to make a cutting garden. Please share any/all wisdom you have in this!
Rooster are docile if there's not a hen in a 2 mile radius--but what would be the point of having just a rooster?

This was so cute, Rhonda! Didn't realize there was such personality with these Roosters! Hope he watches it so he doesn't end up in your kitchen! Love, Esther

Hi Rhonda, I just found your site and love the Rooster..I think he is protecting the hens from you and that is why he is mean...perhaps you should hit him on the back a little so you don't damage the small brain he does have ;) I have a couple of bunnies that live in my house and are litter trained. If I approach my new one, Beatrice, she will box me but if I don't surprise her, she is an absolute doll. Bunny Wunny, our other bunny is long over that. He knows he is safe and secure with us. We've only had Beatrice for 4 weeks and she came from a bad situation so we are understanding.

I did want a couple of sheep and my dear husband said no...they won't allow farm animals in our sub. Not only that they really smell! I do love them though.

I'm coming for dinner...I absolutely love mushroom swiss burgers. They are a true weakness.

Love the rooster picture. There are times I think it would be great fun to live on a "farm", a mini-farm.

Henry the 2 looks so sweet. How many hens do you have? I have three. It's all we can have in town, and no roosters.
Dinner sounds great! Have fun at the B-day party!

Hi Rhonda,
I'm trying to catch up with everybody and wanted to stop by and say hello.

Henry is such a handsome fella but I know first hand how mean those roosters can be! I agree with you..I don't think there is such a thing as a docile or friendly rooster! LOL

Hope

Actually, I DO have a rather docile rooster! Albie Darn I'm a Rooster is an all white Aracauna who also takes very good care of his 9 hens. He has never attacked any of us, tho he will follow me around on occasion...but that is when the girls think I might have a treat for them. They will all come running at me to see what i might have brought them.

That rooster looks just like mine! Except I have 5 of them! What do you do when you have 6 roosters and 6 hens? We had to put the 5 roosters in a seperate pen because all of the roosters were fighting. We were supposed to have STEW too but someone doesn't have the heart to get the chicken in the pot!
