Out of Sorts

I thought I was back to normal and ready to resume posting and visiting. But I forgot to consult Murphy of Murphy's Law and Mother Nature for permission....

2008 has started out with a bang~

As I happily prepared our New Year's Day good luck dinner...ham, blackeyed peas, and collard greens. My husband and son went down into the basement and discovered that one of our hot water pipes had sprung a leak and flooded the basement.

As I was cleaning up wet carpet and water logged possessions, I over cooked the ham~ a beautiful $20 spiral ham...ruined. My DH said it tasted fine, bless him, he is such a poor liar.

We have also been in the deep freeze all week~teens and low 20's at night. This means that extra care must be taken to insure that chickens, rabbits and outside cats do not freeze to death.

One night, we forgot to leave the water dripping...when you live in a 70+ year old house with no insulation, you have to take precautions. We woke up to no water~frozen pipes. My poor sweet husband had to go out into to cold armed with a blow-dryer and a propane torch to melt the ice off the pump.

Of course I know the real reason for all the misfortune. I did not take the Christmas Tree down before the new year. Yeap, automatic bad luck. I finally got it taken down yesterday, so maybe the bad luck will go with it.

All of this foolishness has left me feeling strangely out of sorts and quite frankly, I'm ready to run right back up to the little cabin in the woods and stay there.

So, now that I have told you what I have been up to, I'm going to come stop by and see what you guys have been doing. Of course, I'll remember to ask permission from the powers that be first:)

If anyone can feel for you it would be me! I live in a 100+yr old building that still leaks, the basement floods if we get too much ran, and yep pipes freeze. I am SO sorry for your crappy start to the new year but look at this way, maybe all the bad is all over in less than one week! All but good now for the rest of the year:-)
Blessings for you in the rest of 2008

Hi Rhonda,
Glad to see you back here but talk about a run of bad luck!! I don't get it because I always heard that if you take the tree down BEFORE New Years it is bad luck!! What are we suppose to believe??

I too can relate to an old house and many water problems in the past. We have corrected a lot of the problems but it still is cold and drafty sometimes. Oh well, you can't have the character without the problems I guess!

Good to have you back. Come see me!

Hugs,
Hope

AWWww!
I'm so sorry for your flood!
I hope all is dried out now. I can relate though, we live in a 100+ yr old house and the previous owners didn't update much..long story short I woke up one Sunday morning about 3am to the sound of the sump pump going off! Needless to say a pipe coming off the well pump burst!
anywho..
Happiest of New Year!

Poor darlin'....I have been there..done that! Sometimes, no matter how good we live, things seem to pop up out of nowhere to give us grief. Hang on.....it WILL be ok! I promise!!

Yikes! Ok - things are better from now on!!! Positive vibes heading your way.

When we had our old farmhouse in Tennessee, frozen pipes burst between two floors....Thank goodness for insurance!

Stay warm and have wonderful thoughts :-)

Oh Rhonda! Sweetie I'm sorry you're having such a run of bad luck! When I was taking the tree and all the decorations down on the 30th Dec, my hubby wanted to leave them up for a while longer because he enjoyed them so much, but I said no way! I wasn't going to risk bad luck! lol When you get a spare moment, there's an award waiting for you over at Jacaranda Cottage. Hope all is well there now!

So that explains it! Our bad luck is from the tree that's still up. Who knew?!

I know what frozen pipes are like. I grew up in a 100 year old house and we had drips going on everywhere. Hope things warm up and turn around for you.

Murphy seems to have been working overtime in your part of Georgia. Sorry for your terrible start to 2008, but the 68 degree temps expected this week should help.

Oh, Rhonda what alot of mishaps! Hope you made some "lemonade" with all those lemons! We had a similar day last wednesday and my oldest daughter was out of sorts. I told her, well, when you're given lemons just make lemonade...she looked at me like I'd lost my mind. But what else can you do?
