Sweet Dreams

Last night I had the nicest dream. My family and I were enjoying a game of Checkers. We were sitting around the checkerboard, laughing, talking....just enjoying being together. There was no thought of television, computers, cell phones, chores to do, places to go. In that moment it was just us, the three most important people in the world.

As a child my family and I would often play games together, usually during the winter when it was pitch dark by 6:00 and we could not be outside playing. Our favorite was Monopoly:) My Mama always won this game with out fail!

I usually excelled at Rummy. I remember the first time I beat everyone....did I jump up and down and shout "Yeah! In your face!" Nope, I cried. I felt so bad for causing my loved ones to loose....LOL! I know, it's pathetic, I'm such a softie.

When we got to be older, my Daddy taught us to play poker. That's right poker on Saturday night, Church on Sunday morning....sssshhhh! Don't tell Pastor Norman:) We never used money though, we played for matchsticks.

What I remember most about our family game nights was the sense of togetherness. I know we did not have the multitude of options that are available today, and if we had, maybe we would not have spent so many evenings playing together. I would consider that a huge loss. So, I've been inspired....to create a family game night at my house, with nothing more that some game pieces, a deck of cards and three smiling faces....oh, and maybe a bowl of popcorn:)

So true Rhonda! Can you imagine how different things could be if the children of this generation did NOT have so much "instant" entertainment? I applaud you for trying the less traveled road Rhonda. I have no doubt--"game night" will be FAR better than any TV programming can offer!

Ta for now,
julia

Kids today do NOT know what they are missing from participating in simple family pleasure like this.
That was a sweet dream, even if I do say so myself!

Rhonda,
We play games in this house all of the time. We play Uno, Monopoly, Who Knew?, Boxers or Briefs, Apples to Oranges, Mad Gab.

When it's too dark and too cold to go outside on a Saturday night, might as well pop some popcorn and snacks and have a game night.

Love,
Julie

Rhonda: Nothing like quiet family time. My favorite time is camping...singing songs by the fire. That's one of the reasons I want a firepit...to renew the family memories and hopefully make some new ones.

Hi Rhonda,

I have such fond memories of playing board games with my family, thank you for sharing that and reminding me of that sweet time. In my house the game of preference is chess. My DH has taught both of our sons but I'm still a checkers girl for the most part :)

Sounds like you are going to make great memories for your family! How fun! When I was growing up we got snowed in a few different times during snowstorms and I can remember we had the best times playing card games, it was the best part of being snowed in!
Hope you have lots of cozy game nights!
Michelle

Loved those evenings...
I miss my game nights with my kids now that they're older.
We still try from time to time but not as much!
Thanks, love the memories...

You just reminded me... A few years ago we did "Story Night". Hubby or I would start by telling the first paragraph of a story (we just made it up) and then we'd go around the room and each of the kids would tell a part. Since there's 6 of us, it would get pretty silly. Hmmmm... It's Friday. All my kids are home tonight. I have fire logs... -Polly

Love board games!! We don't do that enough anymore. But speaking of Monopoly -- my eldest (18) is convinced that he and his friends are going to win the McDonald's Monopoly game. They are pooling their tickets together. Good thing he's an athlete....a few extra fries won't hurt him.
